The hormonal shifts of menopause can wreak havoc on your figure. Weight gain or loss, bloating, and sagging or sore breasts are a few of the changes you may have to look forward to, and you might find your personal style needs to change when your body does.
Whatever changes your body goes through, you can continue to feel confident and beautiful as a menopausal woman. In fact, many women feel an even greater sense of freedom and find these the best fashion years of their lives!
Here are some Dos and Don’ts to help you reboot your style during and after menopause:
Do exercise and eat right.Regular exercise and a healthy diet will not only help you to maintain your pre-menopause weight and shape, but will also prevent bone loss. Low impact activities that incorporate stretching, like tai chi, yoga, and pilates, are easy on your bones and can lengthen and tone your muscles and improve posture.
Do highlight body parts you love. Instead of worrying about the parts of your body you’re not happy with, dress to emphasize the ones you love. Have toned upper arms, like Michelle Obama? Show them off in a sleeveless sheath. An hourglass figure like Arianna Huffington? Wrap dresses and cinched waists! Tina Turner’s legs? Okay, NOBODY has Tina Turner’s legs. Moving on.
Do invest in GREAT bras. Maybe in the past you could get away with just about any bra, but not anymore. At this stage in your life it’s all about fit. Go to the store, get properly measured and fitted, and try on as many as you have to until you find the right ones. No matter what changes your breasts experience, with the right bra you CAN get the shape you want and the support you need – your clothes will look great over top, and your breasts will thank you!
Do look to older fashion icons like Dame Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, Oprah, Catherine Deneuve, Lauren Hutton, Diane Keaton, Michelle Obama, Carolina Herrera, Tina Turner, Annette Bening, Jane Fonda, Sophia Loren, Robin Roberts, Arianna Huffington, Dame Judi Dench, and Iman, for fashion, hair, and beauty inspiration.
Don’t underestimate the importance of tailoring. Everyone’s body is different, so how can you expect something straight off the rack to fit yours perfectly? Find yourself a tailor you love and get your clothes expertly fitted. The tiniest adjustment can make a world of difference. Have favorite pieces from pre-menopause that don’t fit properly anymore? They could also be tailored to work for you again.
Don’t be afraid of change. This is “The Change” – you can’t expect those changes not to resound through your whole life! You may have spent a lifetime developing your personal style, but now it’s time to embrace change. This is your chance to reinvent yourself as much or as little as you’re comfortable with.
Don’t sweat the small stuff. Yes, your body is a bit different; no, it’s not the end of the world. You are still you, and you are still beautiful. With a few easy adjustments, you can keep on feeling just as confident and sexy as ever.
